How to Make a Simple Healing Salve at Home

There's something deeply satisfying about making your own healing products. A good herbal salve can soothe dry skin, minor cuts, and muscle aches — and you can make one in your own kitchen.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup of dried herbs (calendula, lavender, or comfrey work beautifully)
  • 1 cup of olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup of beeswax pellets
  • A double boiler or slow cooker
  • Small glass jars with lids
  • Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1: Infuse the Oil

Place your dried herbs in the oil and heat gently in a double boiler for 2-4 hours (or in a slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours). This draws the healing properties out of the herbs and into the oil.

    Step 2: Strain

Using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer, strain out all the plant material. You want just the infused oil — clear and golden.

    Step 3: Add Beeswax

Return the infused oil to the heat and stir in the beeswax pellets until completely melted. The beeswax is what gives your salve its solid texture.

    Step 4: Pour and Cool

Pour the mixture into your glass jars. Let them cool completely on the counter (don't put lids on while warm).

    Step 5: Label and Enjoy

Label your jars with the date and ingredients. Your salve should last 6-12 months if stored in a cool, dark place.

    Which Herbs for What?

  • Calendula: Soothing for skin irritation and minor wounds
  • Lavender: Calming, good for burns and headaches
  • Comfrey: Known as "knitbone" — wonderful for sore muscles and joints
  • Once you make your first batch, you'll never want to go back to store-bought!
