How to Video Call Your Family (It's Easier Than You Think)

One of the absolute best things about today's technology is being able to see the faces of people you love, even when they're far away. Video calling is free, easy to set up, and works on any smartphone or tablet.

Choose Your App

There are several good options, and they're all free:

  • FaceTime (if you and the other person both have iPhones or iPads)
  • Zoom (works on any device — great for group calls)
  • Google Meet (free with a Google/Gmail account)
  • WhatsApp Video (popular worldwide)
  • Setting Up FaceTime (iPhone)

FaceTime usually comes pre-installed. Open the app, tap the "+" button, type in the person's phone number or email, and tap the video camera icon. That's it — you're calling!

    Setting Up Zoom

  • Download "Zoom" from your app store (it's free)
  • Create an account with your email
  • To start a call: tap "New Meeting" and then "Invite" to send a link to your family member
  • To join a call: tap the link someone sends you, or enter the meeting code
  • Tips for a Good Video Call

  • Sit facing a window — natural light makes you look great on camera
  • Prop your phone up against something so you don't have to hold it
  • Speak a little louder than normal
  • Don't worry about the background — nobody's judging your living room!
  • If the call is choppy, try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router
  • It Gets Easier

The first call might feel awkward. That's completely normal. By the third or fourth time, it'll feel as natural as picking up the phone. And seeing a grandchild's smile in real time? That's worth every bit of learning.
